A 40track drive like the TEAC FD-55-A can't read halftracks which have often been used for copyprotection. (The commodore drives like the 1541 could adress 80 tracks!)

I know the Newtronics 5.25" drives are listed as being 100% compatible, but are they good drives in general?

Yes and no. But more yes than no. These are not the most durable ones, but they usually work pretty well. They lack the die cast chassis of older drives, so just sheet metal here. But again, they do work and these are the ones where we still have a few NOS ones which we regularly give out to institutions. In about 6 years of distributing them, we had a single one that was bad, all the others apparently work fine.

I've got a few drives to add/confirm data for:

5.25"
Panasonic JU-475-4AGG: 84 tracks (maxtrack 83), works great
Panasonic JU-475-5AEG: 84 tracks (maxtrack 83), works great

3.5"
Mitsumi D353M3D: 83 tracks (maxtrack 82), works OK (some disks have trouble which work fine with the Sony MPF920 drives I have)
Sony MPF920 Z/121: 84 tracks (maxtrack 83), works great

Chinon FB 354 (Amiga Drive) works GREAT with Kryoflux and writing IPF protected games back to real media in Windows 10. Results boot properly in Winuae via ArduinoDiskReaderWriter and they work in Amiberry on the Pi4 via same hardware, and they work in a real Amiga of course. I did not have this level of IPF writing success until I used an Amiga drive. The Amiga Chinon needs to swap cable pin 2 and 34 and the drive has a jumper to switch to 'DS1' from the default 'DS0'. That was all I needed to do. It did help to use only DD disks of course, and wiping before writing was also key to success.
