CBM 8050/8250 image support

Post by Toast_r » Mon Feb 09, 2015 10:34 pm

The CBM 8050/8250 problem has been mentioned a few times on this forum: they use 100 TPI drives, which are nearly impossible to find with shugart bus.
Since several 100 disks waiting to be archived right here, I really wanted to solve this.
With the help of a friend, I built the needed drive.

We took a Matsushita JU-570-2 drive from a CBM 8250lp and combined it with the PCB of a 48 TPI drive from the same series.
For the CBM drive, the stepper has to go one step for each track, but the 48 TPI drive uses 2 steps per track.
Therefore, we use a microcontroller to control the stepper.
It seems that the drive works as it should. Reading a CBM 8250 formatted disk with -i24 finds the tracks with 23 sectors (65-77) at the right position.

Since the hardware is done now, is it possible, that .d80 (CBM 8050) and .d82 (CBM 8250) image support is added to the software ?

Yes, but likely paid for custom feature.... I mean... There's one drive out there. ;)

The dirve combination could be rebuild easily, so hopefully there will be some more.

We did it in a way that allows 'borrowing' a 100 tpi drive from a CBM 8250lp / SFD1001.
There is only a little modification to the track 0 sensor, that does not affect the use in the CBM drive, since it isn't used there.

How about documenting the mod with pics or a video.

I can't promise native decoding for DTC, but user defined scripting is coming, so... Could create a script for this.

Of course we will document the mod, so that anyone who has the right hardware should be able to rebuild it.

This would be great for dumping 100 tpi disks.

My experiments with modifying the stepper control to step 4x more accurately sort of worked for reading 100 tpi disks using standard drive, but parsing good data out from over 300 track files per side is way too much trouble.
