Periodically reposition head after X failed tracks

Post by Darkstar »

I'm having the following phenomenon from time to time:

I'm dumping with -t999 for some disks where I really only need a sector-dump. Sometimes, the drive keeps retrying again and again for a few tracks. I often find that, when I abort the dump with Ctrl-C and re-start it, on the second run each track will be dumped with no retry at all.

I'm guessing that somehow the seek back to track 0 causes the (slight) misalignment to correct itself and thus the dump succeeds.

How about an option to periodically recalibrate the head after every X failed tracks (i.e. tracks that could not be decoded to MFM or whatever without any bad sectors)

i'm seeing this on my 3" Speccy drive too. the reset seems to push back beyond trk 0 as there is no hard stop.

we're looking into this, as you say it only happens sometimes.
