If the data is damaged there is nothing much that can be done about it, especially if it is a burst sequence, not just a few bits.
The EDCs used in early systems were never really designed for actual error correction, so it's a bit of a misnomer... sometimes you are even lucky to catch certain types of errors
If it is a few bits damaged, or just a few peak shifts it is possible that KF could be used to recover the data, but that can take a lot of time depending on what needs to be done - so the data really should be worth it.
