How to write ADF to disk

Post by markageo » Sun Jun 16, 2013 6:50 am

Hello, I connected the kryoflux device you sent me with my PC and installed it. I am using a MITSUMI D359M3D floppy drive. I type:

dtc -c2
and I get the message "CM: maxtrack=82" which means that the drive works fine.

How do I write? I am trying to write an ADF to this disk (it is an 1.44MB disk). I type:
dtc -fMYIMAGE.Adf -w

and I get all those messages. Any idea?

Obviously data written does not match data used for writing. Try different drive and / or disk. You also might want to use DD disks, as using HD disks for DD data is not recommended.

I have put a sticker on the top left corner of disk in order to convert it from HD to DD and it works. Thanks

No, you did not. You fooled the drive. HD disks need less recording current, you are writing with wrong conercivity.

You need to use DD disks for DD content.

Fooling or not fooling, the question is whether it will work.On my Amstrad 6128 this concept works fine. I will test the disks on my Amiga 500 and let you know.

The question is for how long it will work. I'd assume you came here to get professional advice. You can take it or leave it. Writing with the wrong coercivity (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coercivity) is not recommended.

There was a long discussion about this over on stardot. With machines like the ST or BBC micro with a 1772 controller it is possible to crank up the clock frequency to make it play ball with HD discs in non-HD mode... Or something. Also discussion about why it's a bad idea to format HD as DD, and some commercially recorded archimedes titles that haven't apparently suffered bitrot in DD format on HD discs (but that will no doubt be because they were professionally mastered):

Good luck, but rest assured it will get bad... the domains are different so is the coercivity.
Very good pre-compensation (like what KryoFlux does or any pro duplicator did) might make it work, but this is just trying your luck.

Having recently acquired an Amiga 1200 and writing out disks with my KF using a Sony 3.5" drive - I've had success with of course DD disk and HD disks with the notch covered. Since I don't plan to keep these disks long term - it works fine for now. I had the same issue as above when writing to an HD disk - so covering the hole provided an immediate yet from what I read - temporary solution until I could get my hands on some DD disks.

In a pinch it works - but for how long - yeah - that's the question. Brand new DD's are readily available at reasonable prices on ebay. So rather than risk it, I'd recommend buying some.

Not a professional - but that's my dealings and advice.

I had the same problem this morning and found a different solution.
Stupid me, I pulled the WGATE jumper that is near the floppy ribbon cable connector, to prevent overwriting disks by mistake. This means Kryoflux is not able to actually write to a disk as the WGATE signal never becomes active. So even though DTC may send data to the drive, it does not know what to do with them.
Just place the WGATE jumper back on its two pins and things look much better :D

Cheers,
Joe
