Shugart 801

Post by mucous » Fri Apr 05, 2013 3:32 am

Has anyone had any luck using a Shugart 801 8" floppy drive with the KryoFlux? I see from the Forum posts that the 851 works. Sort of.

I've got an 801 and am hoping to use it soon - just waiting for the parts.

I found this:

The SA850/851 diskette storage drives are enhanced double-headed versions of the standard Shugart SA800/801 drives. SA850/851 drives provide up to four times the on-line storage capacity, faster access time, and lower heat dissipation along with improved reliability and maintainability.
SA850/851 drives read and write in single or double density on standard diskettes and on both sides of twosided diskettes. The drives are exactly the same size as Shugart SA800/801 drives and are plug compatible.
The SA850/851 drives are also media compatible with IBM 3740 and S/32 single-sided drives as well as IBM 4964 and 3600 series two-sided units.
The proprietary Fasflex™ actuator utilizes a flexible metal band for sure low friction head movement and a fast 3 ms track-to-track access time. In addition, Shugart's Bi-Compliant™ read/write head assembly provides superior compliance resulting in excellent data integrity.
Other valuable features include: programmable door lock and write protect plus dual index sensor to differentiate between single and two-sided diskettes.
The SA850/851 will prove highly cost-effective in applications such as: intelligent terminals, minicomputer/microcomputer systems, small business systems as well as word processing systems and intelligent calculators.

I have successfully used the Kryoflux with an SA800, but you should pass parameters for a single-sided disk, otherwise you will get duplicated data (since the drive will just read the same side twice.)

Of course you won't be able to read double-sided disks with this drive, unless they are flippy disks.

Hey gang - an update.

I got the Shugart 801 hooked up using the DBIT 8" floppy adapter and power adapter.

When I try to 'calibrate' the drive a light goes on on the drive! It moves and whirs and hums - and then the software says "Could not communicate with floppy drive." This is the output on the console:

HostFinishedEvent(true)
Command: DTC.exe -l15 -d0 -c2
HostStartedEvent
Reset
FirmwareInfo
UnknownEvent(0019cf1b: info=2, hwid=1, hwrv=1, sck=24027428.5714285, ick=3003428.5714285625, wb=32768, wa=64, wq=8, wt=6
5535, wm=26)
Unsupported: UnknownEvent(0019cf1b: info=2, hwid=1, hwrv=1, sck=24027428.5714285, ick=3003428.5714285625, wb=32768, wa=6
4, wq=8, wt=65535, wm=26)
Device
DensitySelect(DD)
MaxTrack(83)
Motor(true)
Side(1)
DeviceError(DriveNotFound)
CalibrationMaxTrack(0)
Motor(false)
HostFinishedEvent(true)

I'm sort of out of my depth here - any ideas on how to go about debugging this?

To quote Jar Jar Binks - any help here would be hot.

This is GUI output, right? Can you do a command line log?

I'd love to.

What is the command line command for doing a disk-drive calibration?

See QuickStart / Manual in general, these docs were generated on purpose.

DTC -c2

Is what you are looking for.

Thanks for that.

This is what I get from the command line:

C:\Kryoflux\dtc>DTC -c2
Control command rejected by the device
CM: maxtrack=0

Do you have a manual for your drive? (If not you can find it online.) The drives I have, have a dozen or two jumpers which need to be set correctly for it to function the way the KryoFlux (and standard PC) expects. The fact the drive light comes on means your KF and DBit are working, I think you just need to set the drive up correctly.

Hey guys - sorry. Been away for a while. Still at the exact same place. Yes - the drive does stuff. It clicks and lights up and makes encouraging noises. And no, I don't have a manual for the Shugart 801 - I suppose I could look for one and see if they have any useful tips on jumper settings. Question: what do I look for? Obviously there won't be a 'For Future Kryoflux Compatibility' section in the manual. ;-)
