Got the drive yesterday, but mine unfortunately shows *T warnings for the first 8 tracks (80 tracks mode) on side 1 of a flippy disk... So it looks like it needs modification...

I also bought a YD-380B and i'm not sure if it's working with flippy disks :)

I tried dumping Winter Games (which seems to use Vorpal protection). But i alos got a lot of T errors so i suppose it aint working (but i'm not sure as the disk is not in CBM DOS i guess) ? I also had some bad sectors :/

Re: Drives confirmed working with KryoFlux

To my understanding there must be a modification to disable the track zero detection on any standard drive. Even if the mechanics allow reaching tracks below zero, the inbuilt track zero detection would stop the head from reaching tracks below zero! Thats what the wiring and taping with the panasonic drive is for.

At least it might be that there are some drives out there wich are able to go down to track -8 without any mechanical modification...

Since I don't have this drive yet, would be great if someone who could use it successfully would post about the parameters used for imaging, ie -a or -b parameter value and whether additional track 0 bypass electronics was added.

D:\junk\kryoflux\dtc>dtc -p -b-8 -fdumpdir/c64test -i
-i18 -y -g2 -i6 -l8 -t10
It does not seem to work - by the log at least.

The command is also incorrect, so seeing bad sectors may be due to that.
The command you used here checks each track on side 0 as Vorpal AND both sides as CBM DOS:
D:\junk\kryoflux\dtc>dtc -p -b-8 -fdumpdir/c64test -i -i18 -y -g2 -i6 -l8 -t10
Why?
-i18: no parameters since the last -i, so default settings are used for Vorpal (18) format, including side 0 only.
-y -g2 -i6: this means that you override some of the default parameters for CBM DOS (6) format, specifically you want the data to be treated as coming from a flippy disk (-y) and you want both sides checked (-g2)

A disk using the old Vorpal format would have checksums and other magic in place that makes it possible to make a track look like a CBM DOS track, for any tools using or based on the CBM drive firmware, specifically taking advantage of shortcomings in the sector checksum and nybble decoding parts - but in reality it has nothing to do with CBM DOS.
DTC does not use any of the methods from the CBM firmware, and thus there is a very high chance that a genuine Vorpal sector would be marked as bad by the CBM DOS decoder.

What you probably want to use is something like this:
D:\junk\kryoflux\dtc>dtc -p -b-8 -fdumpdir/c64test -i -y -g2 -i18 -l8 -t10
-y -g2 -i18: override the default Vorpal (18) format parameters; treat the data as coming from a flippy disk (y) and check both sides (-g2)

Re: Drives confirmed working with KryoFlux

Post by ZrX » Wed Feb 11, 2015 11:38 am

After looking around ebay I noticed Y-E Data YD-380 and YD-380B have different electronics. There are lots of drives with an identical faceplate but different electronics.

It's possible that one type of electronics doesn't respect the track 0 sensor other than notifying the computer when the head is over track 0, while another type simply forbids negative stepping as is common.

It clearly can't go below track 0 - the command itself is good this time.
