Dumping 5.25" 180Kb disks with a 5.25" DSHD drive ?

Post by wuffe »

Hi,

It is possible to dump 5.25" 180Kb PC format disks with a 5.25" DSHD drive ?
The disks work/run fine in an old IBM XT - dir is ok and programs/utilities can be executed.
But when attempting to dump the disks with a DSHD drive - KryoFlux gives nothing but errors.
Will it work ? if yes what params to specify to KryoFlux ?

Thx

Just do a blind stream dump of the first 3 tracks of both sides, post it, then I can tell the correct parameters :)

Sorry for the delay - I now managed to get access to the disks again.

Attached are two tar.gz archives each containing KF stream dumps of tracks 0-4

first dump is made with a YEData DSHD 360 RPM drive
second dump is made with a Teac DSDD 300 RPM drive

Thanks

It has been a while ago I uploaded the requested floppy images.
It would be nice if someone would take a look at them and put an answer to the original question.
Thanks in advance.

What you posted looks like a protected/custom formatted disk and hence cannot be (correctly) stored in a sector image.
Regardless...
The parameters you need - based only on the posted tracks, obviously:

-k2 -i4 would resolve 0.0, and all tracks on side 1
-k2 -z3 -i4 would resolve any side 0 track, except for 0.0

This is certainly not a simple 180K disk: side 0 alone is 8*512+39*5*1024 bytes, additionally side 1 is 40*9*512 bytes.

Ok thanks - that could not be explained by me attempting to dump a 180K disk using a DSHD drive ?

I'll try to get access to the disks again - and update this thread - thx

One thing more - I posted two dumps of the same disk

first dump is made with a YEData DSHD 360 RPM drive
second dump is made with a Teac DSDD 300 RPM drive

Are your conclusions based on both dumps ?

Of course not :)
It's what is on the disk.
If you find anything different it is usually the result of a drive having problems.
Naturally, the two dumps are identical.

I'm not sure that I understand your comment - I'm no expert here - I'm just asking questions until I understand.
Regarding the two dumps (using DSDD and DSHD drives) that I uploaded - the same track have different sizes in the two dumps
Is that stream meta data that differs as a consequence of using eiter DSDD or DSHD drives ?
