EDSK is best if used with Simon's extension to the format.
The problem with that that It is tied to a specific controller type as it was designed for CPC.

It's probably as good as it gets reading a disk with a standard controller and for a single platform only.

What we'd need is multi-platform oriented and would simply describe disk and track geometry.
I see no reason to be concerned with protections - none of the formats can hold all the information needed for remastering apart from IPF - and there is no reason to re-invent the wheel, especially if it's your very own wheel ;)

For the record 100 CPC games have been preserved in IPF and should we have more dumped, more could be.
There is also a Caprice version available - coincidentally written by Simon ;) - that runs IPFs just fine :)
