Re: GUI Problems On PPC Mac

Post by slowlearner » Mon Sep 03, 2012 10:47 pm

As a new kryoflux owner, not yet user, I had this issue and
sent a question in, _then_ found this thread. I want to
confirm: Do I have no hope at all of running the GUI on a
10.4.11 PPC (G3) laptop?

Any suggestions for my intended use: allowing others
at an upcoming conference to dump their old floppies,
without my having to stand there the whole time. That
precludes borrowing my wife's new MBP, and the only
possible solution (put 1.5 on my powerbook G4 and
leave it around) is not very appetizing either?

Opinions on just using the command line? The users
are all pretty computer-savvy.

Well, I am afraid to say that we don't currently have a command line build for PPC, and the GUI has a dependency on the command line version.

As far as Java is concerned though, AFAIK there is no official Java 6 (the minimum currently needed) for PPC Mac. However, you might be able to get an unofficial build to work. Here is a link that has Java 7 binaries for PPC: https://wikis.oracle.com/display/OpenJDK/Darwin9Build

Sorry, PPC is not supported by KryoFlux. It was discontinued in 2006, and already phased out with recent OS releases. KryoFlux was first made public in 2010. Every OS means support and, although I understand your point, we don't want to invest into something that is EOL.

I would recommend getting a cheap Windows netbook. WinXP is enough.

. . . . yet you support XP, and it's older than PPCs with 10.5.8!!??

Also I tried to use KryoFlux on XPsp3 running in VPC7, but that didn't work. Had to leave my KF in the box for 12+ months until I got an MacMini into the workshop (only PPCs for my everyday use), but now have started imaging my Mac 400K floppies.

Yes, because Windows did not switch from PPC to Intel. Try running an older Mac game on today's machines... and you will noticed it won't work. Run a newer game on older machines... won't work as well.
