Amiga Floppies ..what am I doing wrong ?

Post by Vipersan » Tue Apr 09, 2019 9:38 pm

After much effort I finally repaired my old Amiga 500 ...and some of my original games played just fine..
I then dug out my workbench 1.3.3 disks and oh oh ..bit rot.
I then began a hunt for replacements ..which I now have and they boot fine.
This of course put me in panic mode ..and I'm now looking to archive all my floppys ...
Starting with some games ..these are of course copy protected so figured it best to do raw images as adf wouldnt neccessarily work ..
I'm running the java GUI ..
I saved the disks as Kryoflux stream preservation stream files ...and tried to write them back with Wildewutz 0.7
The process appeared to complete ok ..but the written disks are not recognised by the Amiga ?
OK ..I figured that perhaps this was something to do with copy protection and logically decided to backup my replacement workbench floppies instead.
I copied twice ..once with Raw stream preservation ..and again as ADF
I then took a new disk and wrote workbench with wildewutz ...
Nope ...disk not recognised ?
But when I wrote again this time with the ADF image ..everything worked fine.
Obviously I'm doing something wrong as the hardware appears to be ok...
either I'm dumping the stream incorrectly ..or writing it back wrongly.
I can clone my workbench disks saving and writing as ADF ..but not as a raw stream ..but this wont help me with copy protected disks .
Any suggestions or help here ?
just keep in mind I'm not good with command line stuff ..preferring the GUI if possible.
kind regards

They way writing currently works means ADF written back is fine if there's no copyprotection, but anything in raw that is at some point written on the Amiga will fail due to how Amiga writes on the disk, even if the disk was originally factory pressed.

Now I'm just confused ..
I thought that Kryoflux just dumped raw images of the magnetic flux from the floppy ...thus in was possible to write an exact clone back to a new floppy regardless of the origin and format type ?
and in the process preserve the data for posterity ..?
In other words ..the whole point of having a kryoflux unit and data preservation.

Thanks for replying David ..
I've posted a request for help in the second thread of the 2 links you provided.
I'm guessing I have to use the command line interface and not the GUI if I am to achieve my objective..
But I'm cluless in this regard.

If all else fails ..is there a way to obtain IPF files for the games I have ?
For example Myth ...of which 2 disks now show errors..

Writing a raw stream only works if the data is index-oriented. Amiga OS does not care about the index as far as I know. So if the disks are not written by a professional duplicator (eg all original games) but on an Amiga floppy drive, the procces will obviously fail!

In other words: DTC writes one revolution from index to index, but if that does not corespond with one track from start to end it will not be readable...
