Transportation of 5.25" floppies (ATARI)

Post by mcc » Mon Nov 05, 2018 5:38 pm

Hi,

at my parents I have a bunch of ATARI800 floppies (5.25"), which I want to transport to
my home via train (no car available, sorry)...which are about 300km.

What would be the best way to do so?

Thank you very much in advance for any help!
Cheers!

You should have care with humidity changes, if you use an case, don't open it immediately after arriving, wait a little, this way you avoid moisture condensation. Take the usual care with magnets, and so on.

The most important thing is that if you put it in the floppy drive and hear scratching noises, get it out immediately and clean the heads, some floppies get mold and residues that act as sandpaper, and the residues in one floppy can damage the next floppies you get in the floppy drive. In some cases, the flopy can have a part so damaged that you can see through it. In general, if you see a circular transparent mark in a disk you should count it as irrecoverable.
