TA ScreenTyper 5.25 in. floppies

Post by adamsabi » Mon Feb 20, 2017 4:40 pm

I have several 5.25 in. floppy disks that I believe were created with a Triumph-Adler ScreenTyper computer. I haven't been able to deduce the disk type, though, and have tried all of the KryoFlux image formats. Does anyone happen to know what disk type these floppies could possible be and is it possible KryoFlux cannot read them?

Thanks, Abby

Can you upload a dump somewhere for us to check?

Sure, I could upload them to DropBox. You're talking about preservation stream files, right? Thanks, Abby

Yes, from those we'll be able to analyse the used formatting.

Here's a link to download the files: https://www.dropbox.com/s/sga9tba5g365l ... s.zip?dl=0

Thanks!

DTC can decode the disk as is, but the filesystem looks to be custom. Side 0 has a directory and side 1 just text.

The disks are 40 tracks, 2 sides, 10 sectors per track, 512 bytes per sector, but the filesystem treats it as 1024 bytes per sector. Side 0 is used first and when full continues on side 1.

I've been able to figure out most of the very simple filesystem to extract files, except the exact size of a file.

Supercopy should read and write theese disk on MSDOS PCs (so called SCREENT-Format)! Google for scopy_335.zip to get a copy including a full manual in german language. But be aware that you need a native MSDOS PC to install the special floppy drivers via the CONFIG.SYS file...

Supercopy covers about 250 different formats (mostly CP/M) and went public domain years ago. Unfortunately the source code seems to been lost!

Looking through the manual with my almost non-usable german language I don't think that program can work with actual filesystems, other than perhaps CP/M.

The screentyper (as most what TA/alphatronics did that time) is a CP/M machine (afaik)!
