Problem with stream format on OSX

Post by sky76 »

I started backing up 3,5" DD disks 1 week ago with Kryoflux 2.20r2 (on OSX Mavericks) and everything worked fine (I used Parameters -i0 = Streaming preservation, -i0a = Streaming format guided and -i5 = ADF). Yesterday I've installed Kryoflux 2.51 (on OSX Mavericks, same machine) and a command like

Code: Select all

dtc -l62 -fTest -i0a -fTest.adf -i5 -s0 -e1
still works:

Code: Select all

00.0 : frev: 42454, drift: 0.166 us, tfer: 196929 B/s, rpm: 301.446
00.0 : base: 1.991 us [99.582%], band: 3.985 us, 5.973 us, 7.966 us
00.0 : AmigaDOS: OK, trk: 000, sec: 11
00.1 : frev: 40573, drift: 0.603 us, tfer: 185586 B/s, rpm: 301.443
00.1 : base: 1.993 us [99.614%], band: 3.982 us, 5.979 us, 7.970 us
00.1 : AmigaDOS: OK, trk: 001, sec: 11
01.0 : frev: 40505, drift: 0.770 us, tfer: 189706 B/s, rpm: 301.441
01.0 : base: 1.992 us [99.600%], band: 3.982 us, 5.977 us, 7.970 us
01.0 : AmigaDOS: OK, trk: 002, sec: 11
01.1 : frev: 40526, drift: 0.770 us, tfer: 186113 B/s, rpm: 301.440
01.1 : base: 1.992 us [99.611%], band: 3.982 us, 5.977 us, 7.971 us
01.1 : AmigaDOS: OK, trk: 003, sec: 11
But a command like

Code: Select all

dtc -l62 -fTest -i0 -s0 -e1
does not work anymore. Also "-i2" (CT raw) does not work anymore. :( Here is the output:

Code: Select all

00.0 : The streaming device reported a buffering error
00.0 : The streaming device reported a buffering error
00.0 : The streaming device reported a buffering error
00.0 : The streaming device reported a buffering error

00.0 : The streaming device reported a buffering error
00.0 : The streaming device reported a buffering error

Here are the access rights of the /usr/local/share/dtc/ folder:

Code: Select all

-rwxr-xr-x@ 1 sky staff 24612 27 Jun 14:13 firmware.bin
-rwxr-xr-x@ 1 root wheel 24612 1 Mai 22:50 firmware_kf_usb_rosalie.bin
I thought maybe it is because of Apple's native USB stack, so I disabled some stuff the "Android File Transfer Agent" and the "EyeTV Helper Application" in the startup items, did a reboot followed by a cold restart, but still the same. :( And before the updated it worked.

I'm using OSX Mavericks, latest version. The following "USB-related" processes are running after bootup:

Code: Select all

   40 ?? Ss 0:00.11 /usr/libexec/usbd
   46 ?? Ss 0:00.04 /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework/Versions/A/Resources/usbmuxd -launchd
And this one appears after using the KF device:

Code: Select all

  405 ?? S 0:00.01 /usr/libexec/USBAgent

After another restart there were additional error messages coming from Apple's USB Stack that have not shown up before:

Code: Select all

DarwinUSBComm: error e0004051
System 38, subsystem 1, code 51
00.0 : Error reading stream device
00.0 : The streaming device reported a buffering error
00.0 : The streaming device reported a buffering error
00.0 : The streaming device reported a buffering error
...
I googled stuff like "usb e0004051" but only found this (very old) article - could it be a bus timeout problem? http://lists.apple.com/archives/darwin- ... 00138.html

My system recognizes the board correctly:

Code: Select all

KryoFlux DiskSystem:

  Produkt-ID:	0x6124
  Hersteller-ID:	0x03eb (Atmel Corporation)
  Version: 1.00
  Seriennummer:	00000000
  Geschwindigkeit:	Bis zu 12 MBit/s
  Hersteller:	www.softpres.org
  Standort-ID:	0x14100000 / 8
  Verfügbare Stromstärke (mA):	500
  Erforderliche Stromstärke (mA):	500
In the System Profiler the following "extensions" (Erweiterungen) related to "USB" appeared - I am using no real USB Hub, could this be some kind of "internal" Apple USB3.0 hub? I have a MacBookPro 13" Retina late 2013.

AppleUSBHub Loaded
AppleUSBUHCI Not Loaded
AppleUSBXHCI Loaded

I then tried to install Kryoflux on my second computer (iMac 27" Late2010 running lastest version of Snow Leopard) and stream formats are working there, but only with Kryoflux software version 2.20rc2 (just like they used to on my MacBookPro before I upgraded KF/dtc to 2.51 there).

I was unable to install KF/dtc version 2.51 on this second machine running Snow Leopard (OSX 10.6.8), even though the docs state that 10.6 should be supported?

I did also some checking of access rights and cleaned everything up with OnyX (a small tool used for maintenance tasks) but still Kryoflux installer says that it is not possible to install onto this partition.

So, my questions are, is it possible to...

* get version 2.51 running on Snow Leopard?
* get version 2.51 making stream dumps on Mavericks again (after they refused to work after upgrading from 2.20rc2 to 2.51)?

Any hints?

For now, use 2.20 while we look into this.

Thank you! At least I can dump all stream files on the old iMac with 2.20 and write them later back to disk on my MBP with 2.51?

Is there any difference when dumping disks with 2.20 compared to 2.51?

There is no difference in the files produced - only the way they are being processed is different.

Strange. I need to reproduce that issue here. Is this happening with all disks or only with certain disks? Did you try to reset the device after the error? Is the error still present?

As for your Snow Leopard system, current release is only for 10.7 or higher. The installer package should give you a warning about that and installation should not be possible at all…
But 10.6 is still on my ToDo list...

I think I could reproduce the error (yes, it is a bus timeout).
Could you please check the attached version if this fixes the issue?

What can I say? You are THE man!

I went on to try
dtc -l62 -fFA18Interceptor -i0 -fFA18Interceptor.adf -i5
and it works like a charm!

This is awesome! :) Thank you very much.

Great. I hear a new installer package coming (but not before week end) :-)
