Where do I upload all my preserved IBM PC software?

Post by robbo007 »

Hiya,
Little by little i'm preserving my IBM PC software collection with my kryoflux. Where do I upload this? I see Apple people have the Asimov ftp site and I'm sure Amiga and Atari people have a site. What about PC?

Cheers,
Rob

Don't bother. You will not receive anything, ever. I sent a bunch of PC stuff way back in 2013 and NEVER got anything back. Don't feed the hoarders.

Yeah I saw that. I’m not bothering with them anymore. I prefer to use my time to give it to people who appreciate it and give it back to the community.

Everyone has to obey to laws. US law is different from European law, and some people do not care at all. Technically there's no abandonware. It's copyrights that expire. In Europe it's void 70 years after the last creative person of a joint effort work has died (for a film such a person is a director, writer etc., not sure about games).

SPS is working with other institutions all over Europe in EFGAMP to direct politics into the right direction. Law is changing, and orphaned works might get exemptions. When the law allows it, SPS will make games available to the public. In the US it is different. You put something up where you think it's ok and rights holders can supply a takedown notice if they think something is violating their rights. In the EU it's a clear violation and offenders pay for damages.

It doesn't help to set up another download site that will be closed due to copyright infringement. Yes, these games are old but if the law says they are still protected then they are.

I'd say give it to as many as you deem appropriate (check the law though if it's ok depending on your jurisdiction), but if your only concern is "getting back"... that's tricky as of today.

What are you talking about? I expected to get back .IPF images of the Kryoflux stream files that I submitted, which is what is promised on the SPS page ("you will receive the preserved file from your contribution."), and I have not gotten anything like that for seven years counting. Why are you subjecting me to a speech on copyright law? I did not ask for other people's contributions.

Maybe you want to reconsider your wording as it sounds like there's some obligation here. People are doing this voluntarily on both sides. It has turned out that the sheer volume of user contributions is more than SPS can handle atm. It's not satisfying, but a reality. If you know someone knowledgeable or want to contribute manpower yourself, please get in touch.

If you're wondering where SPS has been active over the years: many institutions all over the world have started preserving digital assets and SPS has been helping getting people trained and on track to properly image floppy disks. I understand this is not solving your immediate need but it helps spreading the knowledge and making sure that this knowledge is accessible in the future.

This is on top of the thousands of images SPS has processed and given to contributors. Also, for the avoidance of doubt, the creation of IPF images is not with the push of a button or command line (like for some third party tools), but an operator based process interacting with a specialised software. SPS has planned to shift a lot of this functionality into KryoFlux (in contrast to 2001, there's now enough processing power for things like "AI"), giving users more options and freedom.
