Is it possible to combine flipped dumps?

Post by Rixa »

A C64 floppy was giving me many errors. I tried increasing the retry count and cycles on the problematic tracks, but that only helped a bit. Then I noticed that the floppy has two index holes so I decided to try it upside down, and it worked much better that way. There was still some trouble, but retries fixed almost everything. Eventually only one track remained broken:

Code: Select all

04.0 : CBM DOS: OK, trk: 003, sec: 21
04.1 : CBM DOS: <error>, trk: 003, sec: 21, bad: 1
04.1 : Bad sector found
04.1 : Read operation failed
However, flipping the correct side back up and doing a bunch of retries on track 4 did eventually make dtc happy:

Code: Select all

04.0 : CBM DOS: OK, trk: 003, sec: 21
04.1 : CBM DOS: OK, trk: 003, sec: 21
So, I'm wondering if there is some way to cut out the working 04.0 from the right-side-up-dump that is broken in several other places, and use it to replace the broken 04.1 from the back-side-up dump. Simply copying the file would put it backwards, wouldn't it..?

Yes, the stream would be reversed.
