Help to find a 5.25'' drive for C64 games preservation

Post by arkpandora » Thu Jan 19, 2017 3:13 am

Hi!

I have uncommon (if not rare) original Commodore 64 games on 5.25'' floppy disks which have not been preserved by the SPS (such as Logidisque's "Mimi" or Radarsoft's "Topographie Europa"), but I have no 5.25'' disk drive (and I still haven't bought a KryoFlux but I am going to order one).

Do you know where I could buy a KryoFlux-compatible 5.25'' drive, or rent one just for my dumping time? I live in Belgium (Europe). I don't know if my original disks are of the "flippy" type because I haven't used a C64 for a long time, but I have non-original flippy disks that contain a lot of demos that may not have been all preserved by other projects focusing on demos, so if I dump all my 5.25'' disks it should be a modified drive, and modifying one myself is beyond my capabilities.

Thank you for any advice!

Jean

I thought the guys here at Kryo sold modified 5.25" drives too? Or maybe they've stopped.

Thanks for your reply!

They did sell modified drives through the Kryoflux Web Store, but there is more demand than supply, despite the price.

I've asked a few guys to advise/help.
C64 disks require flippy-modded drives to dump properly, like most 8-bit systems using 5.25'' drives.

Thanks for your help!

With a regular (unmodified) drive I suppose you can at least dump the up side (side 0) of flippy disks or single-sided disks by asking the software to leave out the data coming from the other side (side 1), but I'm a novice and I still haven't found the time to gather information and read the downloadable KryoFlux manual entirely.

I will order a KryoFlux when I find a working 5.25'' drive.

I was told that modded drives will be available in the KF shop again, but supply will be very limited.

With a normal drive you can dump side 0 of a C64 disk, but side 1 will have 4 missing tracks, 0...3.

In case I miss them or find them too expensive, is there any devoted and trustworthy person in the European Union who I could send my original disks to for dumping and who could send them back to me afterwards, all postage costs being covered by me?

That confirms I would be able to dump single-sided original disks at least if I find a normal drive.

Well, I'd consider doing it. How many disks are we talking about here? Assuming no one closer (Belgium, Germany etc) is able to assist.

Thank you Mayhem and Obaltus! Since the latter is in Namur too, I've just sent a PM to him.
