Dumping Dual Format 5.25" Disks

Post by BarryB » Fri May 20, 2016 3:33 pm

When dumping a Dual Format Disk, e.g. C64 one side Atari the other, I assume you have to dump each side separate as flippy dumping doesn't support 2 formats at the same time?

You just need to chain the parameters correctly like:

dtc -p -b-8 -fdir\title_ -i -fc64.d64 -g0 -k2 -i6 -fatari.img -v360 -y -g1 -k2 -i4 -l8

Right, that seems logical! Your example should dump in one go and create the relevant error checking, plus create the streams for the whole 84 tracks of the Disk, marvellous!!

Chances are, you don't want 360 RPM decoding for the A8 side though and you want the bits flipped in the decoded disk image which is specific to A8 disks.
You normally have to use -i3a or -i4a for an A8 disk, so the above command would look like:

dtc -p -b-8 -fdir\title_ -i -fc64.d64 -g0 -k2 -i6 -fatari.img -y -g1 -i3a -l8

Thanks, I've learned something new as I always wondered if this was possible. A friend of mine collects games on various formats and saw one was dual format so trying to get it off him to dump!

Slightly off topic, but:

I have Mercenary: The Second City data disk, it only has 3 CBM DOS tracks as far as I can tell but can be used on Atari 48k/64k. I have the Altirra Atari emulator + Mercenary but how do I get the Second City dump into ATR/ATX format if it's CBM format? Normally i'd use -i4a and set the output file to use the .atr extension, but if it's CBM? Was the Atari version programmed to read the CBM disk format?

It's possible to use different formats on a disk. Even on the same track.

C64 for example needs a track for directory from the middle of the disk while Atari has it at the beginning of the disk. Both formats can also mark areas of the disk used so they don't accidentally access those.

Had another look at the dump in HxC and the there is FM data (not MFM as I thought) between tracks 23-34 and using -i3a I can create an ATR image of my Second City dump that loads in Mercenary in the Altirra emulator :)

So yes, you are correct, 2 formats on the same side of the disk, it was just finding it and knowing what format to set in dtc!!
