Re: Shugart 801

Oh nice, I didn't realise the FDDC was available. That looks like it'll do the job well.

Re: Shugart 801

Yes please pass along how impressed I was with the photo quality. That's a real 11 out of 10 there, if only all technical photos were half as good as those, diagnosing problems would be so much easier! Power in NZ is 230V/50Hz, however according to the drive labels in your photos, they are 230V/60Hz...

Re: Shugart 801

Wow those are some really nice photos - if only we had a KryoFlux wiki they'd be great example pics. If you look at the suggested jumper configuration (page 4 of this thread, top post, "dsd440_ug_jul81-appendix_d_extract-drive_jumpers.pdf.zip") then you can see that many of the jumpers on your drive...

Re: Shugart 801

@mucous: Re-reading this thread, it looks like 'no disk in drive' can be caused by the drive's index sensor not lining up with the disk's index hole (i.e. using the wrong drive for that disk.) Can you confirm yours line up? Also you said your PCB was different to the manual I posted a while back, bu...

Re: Question about a unique setup...

The Shugart drives do use standard PC signalling (that's where the standard PC interface originated from) but typically they have a 50-pin connector instead of the PC's 34-pin connector. DBit make the FDADAP which works quite well and produces the track-43 signal, but you only need that if you want ...

Re: Question about a unique setup...

The KF can work with each side of a disk separately, so you'll probably have some success imaging the disk to stream files once (double-sided) then using those stream files as the source for a further two single-sided runs, one for each side of the disk. The idea behind the three-step process is tha...

Re: Weird 3.5 PC disk

Perhaps the "JR" in BD2JR.EXE refers to the IBM PCjr? This machine doesn't look like it ever had a 3.5" floppy drive, so it would make sense for that file to be removed - it couldn't be run on any computer the disk would fit in.

Re: Best eight inch (8") drive for disk collection

It's possible that the drive is just slow enough that dtc gives up at 41 tracks thinking that's the limit. Have you tried the slow firmware? It's been a while since I used SIMH but I believe you will need to download an OS and boot that in the emulator, with your image attached to a secondary device...

Re: Best eight inch (8") drive for disk collection

How far does the head move when it reports 41 tracks? I thought most 8" disks had 77 tracks. Certainly RX02 disks do. You can also experiment with SIMH . I was able to image a PDP-11 OS disk with a Shugart SA800 and boot it through SIMH, so I know that one was good. I think you can download OS image...

Re: Shugart 801

If you find someone in Australia let me know, because I'd love to get a double-sided drive that I can swap out with an SA800 (if such a thing exists). My best guess would be to ask at the Vintage PC forum or Amibay.
